Deborah Quinan

My artistic journey began post-retirement, about twenty months after my husband passed away. I had always had the desire to be creative, but never pursued an artistic path; I never thought I was capable of doing so. The discovery of the artist within me has been a great source of hope and joy in this new phase of my life, and I am so grateful for the love and support I have received.

I paint loosely from intuition, finding joy in the discovery of layers of color coming together to form a cohesive whole. I enjoy the freedom to explore paints, color and composition without having to worry about incorporating objects in the painting; and if I do, abstraction gives me permission to render those objects in a new and unique way. I never know where a painting will end up when I start it, and this constant joy of discovery is an integral part of who I am as an artist.  My paintings are highly abstract, which allows each painting to become the viewer’s own, as they will see a painting in a way that makes it uniquely theirs.

I exhibit in greater Boston and on the North Shore, including TAG – The Art Gallery in Boston, and in Newburyport, on Cape Ann, and of course the greater Lynnfield area.  Since beginning to paint I have taken painting classes in Topsfield, at Slow River Studio and at The Art Room, and I have taken numerous online and in-person workshops.  I have sought advice and encouragement from a number of artists and gallerists who have been very generous with their time and support, and I have been mentored by Maria Malatesta, of Rockport.
